Girls with Chess Editorial Illustration

Girls with Chess

Girls with Chess is an editorial illustration created for articles and campaigns about gender equality. The artwork shows two girls playing a game of chess. One girl topples the King piece while the other watches. The toppled King represents the dismantling of patriarchal norms. Two contrasting colors, orange and blue, are used to explore binary identities and to suggest different situational states. The illustration was produced as a high-resolution digital image, so the work can be shared online and printed at flexible sizes.

Girls with Chess Editorial Illustration by Mengyao GUO was recognized as an exceptional illustration of communication design by the A' Design Awards. Girls with Chess Editorial Illustration received the Iron A' Design Award in Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design in 2024. The A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award is a highly prestigious, international, juried design prize which recognizes exceptional design of logos, posters, infographics, brochures, packaging designs, business cards, book covers, billboards and more.
